The gate staff probably were told that there was no TV service on-board and assumed it was broken instead of not present - hardly qualifies as a "LIE" given that it accurately conveyed the fact that you would NOT be getting TV service onboard.
A large % of US carriers domestic fleets have no TV, certainly vast majority have no in-seat TV and the rest have crappy old shared TV.
So, no, American carriers are NOT better than this as you will not have a "nice new plane".
Reality sucks doesn't it?
