Although AA customer representative has assured them before that it should not be an issue, and they were denied boarding due to this.
It sounds like to me that there is some misinformation on AA side, and there is some miscommunication between them and AA. What can I do to help them resolve this issue and get them flying soon without paying huge money (i.e. price difference)?
EDIT: They are foreign students and they have admitted to US with valid passports last year. They have encountered this issue when they tried to fly back to Hong Kong for vacation this year.
If I were the Airline I would deny boarding. I suggest they make sure their travel docs are in order before going overseas. If the traveller is NOT permitted entry to country of destination, it is the responsibility of the Airline to return him at the Airlines cost to the point of departure.
