Exactly, as long as your Arrival flight and your Departure flight in PEK are a maximum of 72 hours away from each other, as Irish national you'll be perfectly fine to fly this way.
I don't remember how long, but it was something like 3-4 hours each way, so not even close. Unless the delays at PEK are worse than usual that day.

However that was SQ, not CA. When I've flown CA using the TWOC rule, they always knew what they were doing.
I guess CA must deal with this all the time, but SQ probably gets mostly people who are flying to and then staying within China.
