Stay at W Guangzhou 13-14 June 2013
I did a one-night stay at W Guangzhou last week. This hotel really has its act together, and I cannot think of anything remotely negative about my stay. The hotel soft-opened end of March and only opened all of the rooms several weeks ago. The only thing remaining to open is a bar at the lobby level. Right now, without the bar, the lobby is very quiet (but, the hotel was also low occupancy during my stay).
I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone, and the W Guangzhou will definitely be my hotel of choice in this city from now on. I used to stay at the Grand Hyatt GZ about 7-8 minutes walk from the W, but the W beats the GH hands down.
The W Guangzhou style is in line with other W's in Asia--trendy, use of interesting and metallic/shiny materials in the decor, etc. The photos on the website do accurately depict the hotel.
Upon my arrival at noon, my room was ready. I had booked into the base Wonderful room on a "room+breakfast" package for CNY 1,588 (a couple of days prior to my stay, a Starpicks rate of CNY 1,388 was actually available). I was upgraded to a Fantastic suite, which really is just that...FANTASTIC. Very comfortable surroundings, very large L-shaped sofa, other single chairs, a very nice workdesk, a comfy bed, good-size walk-in closet, the fluffiest robes you can find, nespresso machine (only with 2 capsules, though), etc., etc. Can't say enough about the suite. Evening turndown was done spotlessly with all amenities refilled, towels changed, extra slippers delivered, etc. During checkin, the receptionist even asks when I wanted the turndown service.
Amenities were Bliss, but the small-size bottles, and not the full-size ones found in some other Asian W's suites.
I would imagine that SPG Plats would have a good chance of getting suite upgrades here. Looking at the floorplan, it seems like 3 suites per floor and the hotel has 25+ floors of rooms. I can't recall and didn't count exactly, but I would estimate that each floor has 20-25 rooms total.
This is the first W in China, and according to the reception, they had to make it "perfect". There were many requests to add a Lounge to the hotel, and thus, this is the first W to have a Lounge (for Platinum members and those booking Suites). The W Lounge is on the 26th floor of the hotel. Very nice design, very quiet, and a good place to relax and have private meetings/conversations. There are evening cocktails offered, and the food quality is very, very good. The Lounge does not open during breakfast hours.
For my breakfast, it is offered in Kitchen...a very good buffet of nice offerings (egg station, noodles station, congee, salad bar, fruit bar, freshly-squeezed and bottled juices, pastry section, etc.). The breakfast is similar to the offering at W Taipei, but probably not as good as the breakfast at W Hong Kong.
All in all, once again, a very solid hotel. Compliments to the team who managed the opening. All the staff I encountered at reception, in the restaurant, in the lounge, etc. were top-notch. A big thumbs up to everything and everyone there. ^
