Others may disagree, but I do not find the next day to be the earliest opportunity, especially as article 8c specifies a later date, at the customers convenience (and he has stated it was not convenient.)
Under the Reg, it is the operating carrier that has to reroute (here: AB) and AB presumably takes the view that they are only obliged to reroute on their own services rather than another carrier's. They therefore offered the next available flight on their services, which was the next day.
