Curious what your overall take on the Austrian food is. Following the argument that good food can be found anywhere in the world - do the Michelin stars in the park (a few walking minutes from Figlmueller) redeem the cuisine of the rest of the country?

Yes ... the Japanese seem to outnumber many and they seem to share the Figl schnitzels and their eyes go wide when they see them. Most of their time is taken photographing rather than eating them. As it was the first place my wife and I ever ate in together in Vienna my wife still likes me to take her to the original around the corner once our bags are dumped on arrival day. But no more as we had our very first bad waiter experience in Vienna there a few trips back and did a suitable TA review which they replied to. Tried to con us out of our change! We always tip .. but we like to decide how much rather than simply have it confiscated. Never happened before, or since. It is unashamedly a tourist trap that has made it's reputation solely on the biggest schnitzel thing.
Austrian food to me is OK particularly "Winter" food. Or a Stelze in the Swisshouse! I was going to write a Würstel stall guide once with a friend ie a Vienna street food guide! As sort of Sausage Safari!
No! Whilst Steirecke rose up the best in the world chart a couple of weeks ago it doesn't improve the food in Vienna overall but to be completely honest it isn't my type of food or my type of restaurant.
