Utter crap, you say? OK fair enough. Just reporting my experience. Yours might be different.

I am Gold Elite with Etihad, travel at least three times a week in MENA, and I think I know what I'm talking about. CAI is an awful airport, staffed and surrounded by opportunist hawkers.

But hey, if you don't want to take my word for it, so be it.
