Just telling you what the guidelines are. Every airline for commercial reasons sets their own policy, and there is probably no more competitive International route than New York/London. BA/VS offer free complementary bar, AA offers only free beer and wine, UA charges for everything as far as I know. As far as offering headsets versus booze (officially) well over a year ago - Customers who couldn't take advantage of a drink due to age, religious reasons, or other considerations were very instrumental in deciding that headsets were preferred, especially as 99.5% of the fleet had PTV's to help pass the time during a delay.
Well NY routes are 9/10 delay related to begin with :P
But yes it hasn't been a problem otherwise (in the NY traingle). The only time a FA said no to me was when I requested sparkling wine and she said AC doesn't serve that (despite it being on the menu and this was AC mainline), but that she had lots of hard liquor she could serve me up
