So, it is smart in the sense where it lists the difference only, YET it is not smart in the sense it is PER PERSON. I would speculate it might be intentionally misleading by displaying the smallest amount possible?

Of course, taxes are included nowadays. So, the wording is just wrong.

What I got was:

- no availability for Saver Economy
- availability for Standard Economy at 12,500 miles
- availability for Saver First at 12,500 miles
- availability for Standard First at 37,500 miles

When I click the Standard Economy, the next screen prices correctly at 12,500 ADDITIONAL (PRICE DIFFERENCE).

So, I can see if you picked an option that says 12,500 on the availability screen and do not pay attention to the next one (which has 12,500 listed as the Additional), you can end up getting charged at something higher than what you expected! Then it gets multiplied by the number of passengers and if it is round trip....
I encountered a similar issue recently where I misread the confirmation screen (not realizing that the Web site wanted additional miles), and I suspect that something similar happened to the OP. It's great that we can change flights (especially *A flights) without calling, but the way the UA Web site presents the flights and costs is definitely misleading.

In my case, UA compounded the issue by not deducting the additional miles right away, so I didn't realize that anything was amiss. (I had selected flights with Saver F availability, so there should have been no difference in the cost.) Not to mention that UA changed my flight to a Standard award even though I didn't have enough miles in my account. I didn't realize what happened until a few weeks later, when UA finally got around to deducting the additional miles and I noticed that my account balance went negative.
