So I have a question on the "Theft Protection". According to the Hertz website it's a mandatory roughly 15 a day. But then it goes on to say that they'll still charge you a large amount of money for damage due to theft. Does anyone have any experience with this? And what, if any, insurance would cover not having to pay these large sums?

We are planning on renting in Venice, driving to Umbria and toodle-ing around in Umbria before dropping off in Perugia for train back to Rome. So I would think theft is less likely there, but I really don't know.
