Then you're having far better success than I ever did. Now having said that, I've flown with AC on only two flights this year ... and that was only because they remain the only non-stop option between YYZ-GRU. I've otherwise shifted flights to other carriers that consistently provide a better deal.

That may well be the case. But E35s were never the ones who skewered me on upgrades, it was SEs and those on Latitude flight passes. On some routes, like YYZ-FRA, that's still very much the case.

If you are having success good for you but is it at the gate or before hand?..... most are seeing less and less upgrades at the window IMO, and to pay that kind of fare difference when s/he can be guaranteed an e+ on UA (no gate disappointment) .....thanks for being loyal......
Bingo! OP (me/he) tried desperately to be loyal to AC in 2012 but gave up midway through the year when I decided I couldn't justify spending more than necessary just in order to collect status that seemed to have less and less value.

Unfortunately, AC cannot compete with many other airlines on many other routes either. It isn't just one flight to one destination. This latest booking is only one example of what I've experienced time and again over the past year. It started with a trip to Korea, where AC was three times the price of an almost identical routing on United. The more I shopped around, the more I felt like a fool for automatically giving AC the business for so long.
