I think the point is that buying 1K outright for $12k is probably not necessary, and the finances don't pencil out for most people. With careful scheduling of flights and use of mileage and paid upgrades, you should be able to keep your spouse in C most of the time, without spending big $$$.
But hey, there is no price that can be put on marital harmony. If $12k is your price, then go for it. I don't think it's "crazy", just a choice you can make with your money. And if you fly 4-6 long flights per year, as someone pointed out, that's a base of 30k miles or more, so with judicious purchases of PQMs along the way, you should get to 1K for much less than that.
