I agree that the front desk has been kind to me as well - champagne is a nice touch, however, I still prefer a clean, well maintained hotel.
Definitely agree it's a matter of preference & either one is fine.
I've stayed at LHR Ren numerous times over the years. Yes, the rooms are tiny but I've never experienced a problem with cleanliness in room or bathroom. To me the less expensive rate, good lounge offerings & the great views of the runway are enough to tip it to Ren vs. Marriott.
But either will work for someone that arrives late at night or has an early am departure. If someone is making a decision based on $$ alone, then Ren has always been less expensive in my experience.

If $$ isn't an object, then I agree that staying at GH the night before still allows one to enjoy London one last night. If $$ and/or concern about really early am departure, then either of the LHR properties works instead.
