I assume they're sending you because you're good at what you do and can interact with the customer. These two things are great skills to have. My company has two types of devs - ones that should be kept in a cube and ones that can be sent on client visits. Both are vital, the latter are more marketable.
I am thinking that they shun upon teleconference or they don't have VPN/Remote Desktop enabled at some of their remote sites, and the interactions would be with other managers at other facilities to build reports for them. This is purely my guess. The job involves a lot of SSRS/SSAS/SSIS work. So its basically using the BI solutions that Microsoft has out.
