When I have a Chinese visa, and am in HK, I ALWAYS stay in Luo Hu. Even with an early flight from HKG, because the transfer is simple- KCR from Luo Hu to Sheung Shui, then A43 bus to the airport. The worst part of this is the (quick) slog from Sheung Shui KCR station to the bus stop, because it's always crowded and filled with smokers.
Anyway, staying in Shenzhen is particularly convenient during major HK conventions, when even the hovels of Chungking Mansions cost ≥ HK$800 per night.
