Umbrella as hand luggage?

I'm off to Mumbai soon and it's certainly dampish there at the moment (98 mm of rain in 12 hours on Sunday)

I recently bought a Fulton birdcage umbrella (the clear sort favoured by the Queen.......) and had planned to take this with me, but have discovered that it is too big to fit in my hold baggage case. Can I take it on as hand luggage? I can't find anything about it on ba.com It is quite large - 92cm in length.

I'm flying in CW.
