You really didn't have either a ticket nor a boarding pass. What you did have was a reservation number that didn't reach the final phase, the ticketing phase. Happens quite a bit.... That's why a lot of us verify what the e-ticket number is and reserve seats, that's an easy way to find out if your reservation is valid.
