I have often been asked (at check-in anyway) about my onward/return tickets when travelling to countries on one-way tickets (where it is not entirely obvious to the agent that I won't run into visa issues on arrival). If they can see you are on a "normal" itinerary, they rarely ask.

But be warned that one-way tickets do raise flags. (Of course, you may skip off and not use your return. But when there is no return flight at all - they have to ask about your plans)
As a US citizen, I travel more often on one-way tickets when entering the Schengen zone than I do on roundtrip tickets.
