I'm not sure I understand this point. A laptop weights considerably less than the allowed bag weight in the overhead. It is more dense, but well within the weight limits. Any rollaboard up there weights more than the laptop-in-case. I hope you're not suggesting that the OP would have been, in any way, liable if the laptop, properly stowed in the overhead locker, falling out during turbulence when the door opened of it's own accord, had struck someone.
