i've booked countless reservations with and for my kids as adults, from the time when they were born (I think we tried the lap child thing once). we never had a prblem. If the fare is the same (it is for domestic US reservations) there is no reason to knock yourself out and do it any other way. Kids end up on separate reservations all the time.
