The first time when are son will be approx 3-months old my wife will be go out alone (I will join her for the return). As you suggest, I was also thinking of getting a smaller/lighter/cheaper buggy for travel that could be gate checked (and returned?), but which also took our car seat (maxi cosi cabriofix) - which fits to the Bugaboo. Is this something you have/do? Also, in such a scenario, can you bring the car seat onboard as a carry on when infant is sitting in lap etc? Wife will be in CW.
Sorry for the detail and all the questions, but figured it would be good to benefit from the advice of someone who knows! ^
We flew with Miss S when she was 8 weeks old. We checked in the pram body as outsized baggage (the soft mattress/liners went in a suitcase) and gate checked the car seat (Cabriofix) and pram chassis. We had the intention of just keeping her in the car seat through the airport but we used our sling instead (a Moby wrap) which was far superior as it keeps your hands free.
All parts of her pram were included as part of her luggage allowance. At BHD the car seat and chassis were returned at the jet bridge; however at Heathrow we didn't see them until baggage reclaim, another reason we were glad of the sling. All BA staff couldn't have done more to help^
