I agree... I wouldn't use my avios to upgrade on that route but he has a ton of membership rewards. Plus it's his points and he can do what he chooses. If he buys the tickets through the BA site can't he use avios to upgrade those if he wants? What is the cost (avios wise) to upgrade from a revenue coach ticket to bus/first?
As noted by shorhauldad, I don't think he can buy an AA domestic flight from ba.com that is not connecting to or from a BA international flight. If he could then you can only use avios to upgrade an AA flight from certain full-fare classes, I doubt your $500rt coach fare is in Y or B fare class.

4.Upgrading using Avios Points on BA, AA and IB Flights are permitted on eligible published fares only (Fare classes are: J, C, D, W, Y, B).
