All depends on the loads and date of travel. Just wanted to make OP aware of some of the goings on at CUN so he can make his friend aware. I have seen all kinds of things happen in CUN, including my upgrade disappearing on one flight, although AC made amends nicely after complaining when returning home.
It can be a bit of the Sxxt show there. Not surprised you weren't able to upgrade on a reward as it is only same day at the airport. Best is to try and secure the space prior to day of travel IME.
