How about a non-ticketed confirmation for one-way return/onward travel? Saves locking up money.

I just use award tickets and cancel/redeposit at will since I have fee waiver opportunities on award tickets. That or regular paid tickets which can be cancelled within 24 hours without fees.

A US citizen's 5-month stay in a Schengen country without a visa may not necessarily violate the Schengen zone requirement for all US citizens, although there would be a violation situation for most US citizens.

Schengen zone passport control very infrequently asks about proof of onward/return travel. I have way more than a thousand entries into the Schengen zone as a US citizen, yet it doesn't even take more than one hand to count how many times I have been asked about proof of onward/return travel by Schengen countries' passport control authorities. The number of times where I've shown onward/return travel tickets at Schengen zone passport control? Zero. Times I've been denied entry into the Schengen zone as a result of that? Zero.
