Regardless of how you "got" to F (upgrade, GPU, RPU, award ticket) if downgraded you are due compensation based on the distance of the flight.
The rules are found in in the GA's system under GG OVS DOWNGRADE and, IIRC, specify that you should receive a mileage adjustment to your Mileage Plus account, redeposit of GPU/RPU (if applicable), or refund of fare difference. In addition and an ETC based on:
MILES
Less than 1000 -- $200
1001-2000 -- $250
2001-3000 -- $500
3001-4000 -- $1,000
4001+ -- $1500
Thanks for the (well referenced) data. I wonder, does BusinessFirst count as first class from a downgrade perspective? Or does First only exist in 3-cabin aircraft?
