What defines high annual spend? A percentage of your gross income or just real big numbers?
I don't pay for my mortgage, car payment or anything like that on my cards.
Except for a balance transfer, which usually doesn't offer points/miles, it's extra steps or fees to put debt on debt, i.e. charge your car payment to your credit card. It can be worth the fees if you are doing this to make a spend to get a sign up bonus, but not for everyday spend.
