A couple of years ago I experienced a similar situation on NRT-ORD...the offer was $750 plus the fare difference and a guarantee of an open seat next to you in E+...plus the offer of a C class meal and beverages on the flight. I took the offer since the fare difference was $2.5K+ (its hard to pass up nearly $4K in cash and certs!!) and I ended up with three E+ seats to myself.
If they had offered me $750, C food and drink, and an E+ seat with a seat blocked on either side, I would have considered accepting the offer. But just $250? that's absurd.
