I must agree. While you'll still hear me defend Delta's decision to do what's best for Delta (and equally remind each customer they ought to do what's best for themselves), the horrible attempt to sell this by pointing the finger at other carriers is absolutely ridiculous.
I'm not deriding the decision... just the way they handled it in this case. If Delta believes this is the right move, they need to just own it.
They'll never do that. The one time they did own it ("It was a difficult decision, but it was the right one") became fodder for parody and cynicism. And rightfully so.
