I see nothing in any account that religion played a role and I can't think of a worse lesson for a religious leader to teach a student that they can do whatever they want and, if someone objects, to call them a bigot. As a Jew who has seen true anti-semitism, I find the adults' actions even worse than those of the kids. Unless I missed it, I don't see any account of the teachers claiming anti-semitism - just the students.
