He will have to keep in mind that if the return flight is not upgraded prior to ckin, the ckin staff at CUN sell off the upgrades for $250 a piece at the airport so he should be aware of those competing for the space. The earlier at ckin the better chance for upgrade in my experience and this has been as an SE.
This was not my experience. My wife and I had paid for J, I was trying to get my nephew up there as well since he was on points and IKK was not available.
I asked for upgrades (for 1 pax) on both the outbound and return (YYZ CUN) and was told the cabin was full both times. The outbound had 2 dead-heading FAs up front, and the return had 2 off-duty FAs up front.
I was not impressed.
