Agree. Not too difficult to process a couple of last minute upgrades from the long waitlist.

Not sure I agree. While this seems reasonable the problem is that the upgraded passenger may have given up a nice E+ or exit row aisle (my usual choice) when the upgrade processed, and will now be forced into a middle E- seat at the gate.

The better procedure would be to simply save a couple of seats until 10m before boarding, rather than filling the F cabin early as they now do.
