About 2-3 years ago, fares to Brazil took a big jump, to the lower side of what you are quoting, and have been edging up for high season. I don't think this will change until well after the Olympics, if then. The only way to get a small break on fares might be to take some crazy route where all the flights are going to be late and it's going to take you 3 days to get there because you miss your scheduled flight and 3 more to get back (just happened to someone I know, trying to save a few pennies). The only time I've seen anything resembling a fare sale for Brazil since the late 90s is when some airline was close to going out of business.
I have found $800-$1,000 in past year off season.
