Some states require you to have ID to order alcohol, no matter the age - it's not just the airport bars that do it. Most bartenders/waiters use common sense and only ID if you could possibly be under 21 but if they've recently been caught then they usually are strict with everybody.
Which stems from abuse. If your friend is the bartender and you're underage, you will certainly look over 21 for some odd reason. Had to explain this to an elderly German couple in their 60s in ATL who were terribly confused as to why they were being IDed for a glass of wine. Told them to take it as a compliment...
