we went to macchu picchu and peru in the mid 70's. There were no hotels at the site. You had to travel from cusco and there were no crowds. Ditto for Guatemala about the same time we stayed in a hotel where the first two floors were under waye and we artived ina boat The first time in hong kong we were taken to the new territories to "look over" into china which was rice paddies and peasant farmers and transfer to the Chinese was decades away. It felt exotic at the time and led to a lifetime interest in seeing the world and experiencing different cultures landscapes and environments. There is a veneer of globalism and we are all alike but real culture is still hiding behind. We just need to keep looking and traveling.
