My opinion for him is to pay the $1600 and enjoy his 3 years of *G and be done with it. $534/year for Gold status, I dont know why people would complain over that. Simple as that.

For most airline, a $1600 ticket won't even get you to silver level and that's flying from North America to SE Asia and back. So for him to complain that he has to pay $1600 to achieve *G for 3 years is nothing but white whine.
