What makes a destination exotic? Differences around the world?
In a recent thread I saw that Seychelles was called exotic, partially because of the expense and trouble to get there from the US. Being from the US, it seems (to me) that the Caribbean or a trip to Western Europe has become blasé, i.e., friends and family still go, but it doesn't warrant much conversation. Even Fiji and Maldives, which I thought are quintessential exotic destinations, have become pedestrian? I detect a surging trend to seek out Asian and African nations that are exotic, but seem a bit miserable (for the sake of an experience vs. pure leisure?). Curious to hear everyone shed some light on what’s en vogue, and how trends change (e.g., in the 80s Americans went ____, in the 90s ____ used to be full of French and Germans, etc. etc.)
