Why Can't AA Computers Search Old Res Locators (PNR)

I spent an hour with EXP desk Trying to track down a previously cancelled but not refunded award flight.

I know AA looks these up by ticket numbers. In this case it was 2 people on orig, PNR, then I used one of the tickets for a different flight date which caused re-ticketing and I do not have the ticket number of the 2nd person on original PNR.

In this day and age where computers can search on any field why is it that AA's computer cannot search based on old record locator.

The original reservation was approximately 2 months ago.

BTW- after 1 hour she found it.

THANKS
