are you flying all your sectors on OZ? Then you can check your luggage in all the way to LAX from HKG, even with a short stopover in Seoul. I've done that numerous times on SYD-ICN-JFK flights and have had no problems.
Thanks for the info. I am on OZ the entire way, however I booked a multi-city trip with HKG->ICN on one segment, and ICN->LAX on the other segment, with ~36 hours in between. I guess I could just ask at HKG whether they could check the bags all the way through? I know that sometimes OZ has longish stopovers (e.g., land at 5am, depart at 8pm the same day), however in my case there is a full 1.5 days in between, so they may not want to hold onto the bags that long. But the option to store the bags at the airport would be fine as well.
Now, time to pick out where to eat!
