I work in a Forbes 5 Star/AAA 5 Diamond hotel. We offer 24-hour room service. During "normal" hours (breakfast through dinner), the food comes off the same line as the restaurant. It's actually rather good and isn't inflated over the cost of dining in the restaurant. There is a room delivery charge of several dollars and an automatic 18% gratuity, but no additional service charge added. To be honest, I can see how room service may only be a break-even or possibly even loss-leader service. There have been nights I've worked in the restaurant which is moderately busy, but there are only a handful of calls to room service.
