Riots like the one in London are scary when you are nearby and it was scary (ish) to see riot police drive through areas I frequent / live in (even though I was reasonable distance from any actual riot activity) and the media shows only certain aspects - certainly locations - which can easily come across as "the whole city is on fire".
It appears the FCO shares this view as well. Their
Turkey travel advisory page (helpfully provided by
origin) states in its first paragraph:
Following recent demonstrations in Istanbul and other cities in Turkey in which police used tear gas and water cannons, the possibility of further demonstrations remains high. We advise British nationals to avoid all demonstrations.
That last bit is easy enough to accomplish.
