"Noise-cancelling" headphones usually make the pilot's announcements more clear. The engine noise is cancelled -- not human voices which are often more clear.

Back in the old days, I would just get rear seats in the MD-80! Then, you didn't have to worry about hearing anything for the next 24 hours!
