Unfortunately, I have found AAA will list discounts on their website/app that aren't honored by the merchant. And since the merchant is not a part of AAA they do not have to honor them. Complaining to AAA or the merchant's corporate offices goes nowhere either. All you get is finger pointing to the other party and the customer/cardholder is left in the lurch.
Personally, for hotels, if my membership number isn't recognized, I just enter 430 as the international club code and let it ride. If the property asks for my card, I show it and that's the end of that. Training the field staff is not in my job description.
