Actually you don't need to go through any of this hassle. The key is..don't attempt to cancel checkin or get a refund prior to departure. Simply be a no-show for flight..after it departs you can go back online and view the itinerary which will then show up under the "Cancelled" tab. You can then easily have it refunded to your credit card.
I agree it shouldn't be done frequently.
Just to clarify for others reading: this only works with refundable tickets. If you do not cancel your non-refundable ticket before departure, you will lose the value of your ticket.
Does no-showing on an award ticket work the same way? Do you need to book a standard award (full Y) or will it work for a saver award (X/XN) as long as the person is Plat or higher?
