I disagree that DL is giving you a free flight... you are paying the 'taxes' on the primary ticket along with airport fees. Also included is the Amex annual fee which DL gets a cut on.

I know it states that when you book, I'm just pointing out that it does not make sense based on the policy of other award tickets that are actually 'free' and upgradable. DL made a serious effort to block these companion tix from getting on the upgrade list with the inhibitor stuck on the fare basis.

A nasty side effect of this upgrade inhibitor, in case anyone has experienced it, is if you use the reserve F companion ticket and there are irops and you get rebooked on a flight that doesn't currently have F available, you still can't get on the upgrade/standby list for F in case a seat comes up.
