100% agree with OP. Giving the benefit only to frustrate you when that flight is bound to be the one where everyone is upgraded and there are empty seats while you sit in the back just produces bad will. They are the rules, but they are customer unfriendly rules that should be re-thought. Make the upgrade status "at gate only after all other UGs have cleared" and nobody loses.
