Its very specifically BA's GDS only. QF doesn't have this problem and it uses AMADEUS, and neither does LH. Actually, no, LH sometimes has this problem too. But so far, neither SQ or CX has this particular issue and they can change FFPs one segment at a time. (All mentioned above use AMADEUS as their GDS). But for BA's it seems that it must be changed BEFORE check in. Apparently once the airline checks you in, and even though you haven't yourself, nothing can be changed beyond that. Something I might try to do before my flight from HKG to LHR this weekend.
To precise, LH does not use Amadeus GDS completely yet(only Reservations systems AFAIK), and BA uses an old GDS soon to be changed.
I only had issues with FFP using A3 FQTV on SQ, but according to the phone rep at SQ I contacted, this is because they were migrating to a new Amadeus GDS at the time I flew with them and miles did not post to the correct segment.
I tried, and tested successfully a few months back with the combination of A3/SK FFPs on *A metal carrier on Amadeus, no problem. Ditto on a combination of AY/CX FFp on OW .
