I think (not absolutely sure) there is a rule saying you need the seat next to the window so that the car seat does not blocked a potential escape route.
When we had babies and flew AS, they would pre board those with young kids. I usually went first and install the seat before my wife arrived with a higher boarding group number. Then all we had to do was plop the baby in his seat, and not block the aisle.
