PS. I prefer Avis cause they have lower rate than other companies...
Just sign up for USAA yourself- it takes about 5 minutes. Answer all the questions truthfully about military background(s), and you should have access to the discounts on rental cars, among other things.

Then, just print out a copy of your USAA welcome e-mail w/ your member number and take it with you when you rent, just in case.
