WSDOT updated that detour is adding extra 40 minutes to the normal commute on this stretch of I-5, and that's probably for the short detour and not for going out east (S534) & then north (S9) to go west (S20) again before getting back on for northbound traffic (RV's, campers & boat trailers in tow ...

)
Google ^ is quick in updating their maps already and the NAV app is showing an alert for driving directions. Linking the detours with existing traffic cams would be very useful for out-of-towners to plan their options. Air travel over this Memorial Day weekend is supposed to be down 8% and despite uptick in gasoline prices, more are hitting the roads (this afternoon) & driving.
It's troublesome that an oversized/height truck with DOT permit & led by escort vehicle/driver can managed to miscalculate the overhead danger and went thru intact, and the bridge structure just buckled to the point of collapsing into the river below. Thank God the 3 people in their vehicles survived the plunge - the company (and its insurance carrier) might be faced with a $15 million repair bill and motorists will not be happy for weeks & months to come. Some of the bloggers raised a more serious question, "is that all it take to bring down one of America's 60+ years old bridges ?"
Here in NYC, we also have out of town semi-trucks running into parkway & low underpasses every now & then, for whatever reasons resutling in minor damages but we have yet to see a bridge coming apart, yet - count our blessings ...
