First Class on East Coast is actually rather civilised, on an evening departure you'll get a hot meal, wine, spirits etc. Just accept you're going to arrive late, enjoy a drink or two, and enjoy the journey. It can be really scenic around the border with England.
Beware that evening meal service is only on selected trains, currently not from 7pm onwards when the "all day" menu is served (sandwiches etc).
